Samson Vowles: “Good UX design is based on empathy, curiosity and open-mindedness”
Reading Time: 2 minutesSamson Vowles is a multi-disciplinary designer who creates design resources. He is Founder and Art Director at Delightful Design Studio. In conversation with Samson, he let us know how he works with templates, fonts and current trends.
What is your passion about design?
For me, design is the nexus of unbridled imagination and problem-solving. It is a chance to make human lives better with creativity.
Tell us about Delightful Design Studio. How do you work with templates?
Here at Delightful Design Studio we offer creatives. We provide resources for free and premium. Also templates that help speed up designers’ workflow allowing them to stick to what they do best.
How would you describe working with a start-up and, at the same time, with a global corporate?
Working with a start-up is a fast-paced environment with the opportunity to take on more risk. Global corporates are slow moving monoliths with a tendency to play it safe.
What do you think about minimalistic design?
I believe that minimalist design allows designers to narrow their focus on the most important part of a design.
How do you combine fonts and how many types will you use on one website?
I only ever use two fonts in one design. To make my selection, I look for inspiration in other designer’s work as well as trusting in my gut, there is always a little image in my mind of a perfect font combination.
How it’s been your experience with UX design?
Good UX design is based on empathy, curiosity and open-mindedness. If you don’t have these emotional skills, you will not create great experiences.
How do you incorporate current design trends into your projects?
Incorporating design trends is something that many designers like to jump on the bandwagon with, it’s easy to gain viral traction if you include some sort of hot trend. But one of the problems with surrendering to trends is that your work begins to become dated very quickly, trends are temporary and style is forever. I make my own twist on the current trends, not to follow, but to evolve into a direction that I think is a more nuanced approach.
What tip would you give to someone before creating his/her website?
Make sure that you are not overly ambitious. This is absolutely key, start off with the bare minimum you need and get that done, and launch it. Get it done as quickly as possible, do not elaborate, accentuate or expand on what you do not need is incredibly tempting to make things more complicated but it is even harder to make things simple.
